Chinese university designs experiments for Tiangong-2 Space Lab

"Alloys from Space"are silver-copper-germanium (Ag-Cu-Ge) and silver-copper-antimony (Ag-Cu-Sb) ternary eutectic alloys. Currently follow-up analysis and research of the alloy samples from the Tiangong-2 space lab are underway.

As one of the 14 scientific space experiments carried out on the Tiangong-2, the "Integrative Material Experiment" was particularly captivating. It was led by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, CAS, and was jointly conducted by 6 institutes of CAS and Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU). NPU was the only university to participate in the experiment.

According to Professor Xie Wenjun from the key Laboratory of Space Materials Science and Technology (LMSS) at NPU, the university's project was titled "Solidification of Multi-component and Multiphase Alloys in Space."In their experiments, two ternary eutectic alloys Ag-Cu-Ge and Ag-Cu-Sb were researched. The experiment involved heating two alloy samples to a molten state and then allowing them to cool naturally in microgravity conditions. Meanwhile, using a purification agent, high under-cooling and rapid solidification of those two alloys were achieved.

A total of 18 material samples were reportedly used in the experiments, which were divided into three batches. The two samples that NPU worked with were among the first and second batches, and were the only space material samples designed by university researchers.
